The Greene County Detention Center, located on Depot Street in Greeneville was
built
in 1987 and was constructed to house 152 inmatesThe average population of the
jail varies from 270 to 275 inmates. As a result of the overcrowding of this facility,
a new Greene County Workhouse has been constructed and became operational
May 12, 2002
This facility will house 276 minimum security inmates including those who are on work
release, and the Bureau of Prisons work release program
The Detention Center will remain operational and be used to house "convicted felons",
medium security prisoners, pre-trial detainees, and Federal Inmates
Jail Administrator Neal Matthews
Corrections Officers Three Shift Lieutenants, Three Shift Sergeants,
and fifty-nine corrections officers
Fifteen of these officers are assigned to the
Workhouse at this time
Additionally, ten of these officers are considered
"Support Staff"
Medical Staff The medical staff consists of Dr. Matthews
five full time Nurses and one part-time nurse
Transport There are five part time "transport officers"
Courthouse Security There are three officers assigned to serve as security
officers for
Sessions, Criminal, Chancery, and Circuit Court
Food Service There are six full time cooks that prepare meals for the
inmates three meals a day, seven days a week
Maintanence There are two officers assigned to jail maintanence and
inmate labor is used for assistance
